Linkstation NAS

Review Date: January 30, 2009
Reviewer: William Christopher, Baton Rouge, LA
The 2TB Linkstation Pro Duo does everything the folks at Buffalo say it will. The configuration utility is a simple web based utility like used on many routers. The setup offers many powerful features like adding numerous user accounts with varying permissions to different shared folders. I have used this feature to give each person their own backup folders for their PC's in addition to putting all our digital pictures in one place for everyone to use.

Out of the box it comes setup for Raid 0, non mirrored, 2TB capacity. Change over is easy but did take about 5 hours for the drive to perform disk tests. Once completed, it has a 1TB capacity and all the data is mirrored on both drives so you won't loose data (why I bought this drive).
One default I changed on the drive was to set a static IP address for the drive, otherwise a router reboot might cause the IP address to change which can cause problems with breaking your mapped drive (found this out on a print server a few years ago).

For everyone who complains that Vista won't work with this product, TURN OFF the Antivirus/Firewall. Turns out my Trend Micro firewall was on and I couldn't get the install to work. Once I figured it out, everything started working fine. If you have a firewall in your router there is no need for using the Windows or Antivirus firewalls.

Drive is quiet - I have it on top of my entertainment center, where the router is, in the living room and can't hear it run. Works fine with wireless access thru the router but that makes it slower that being direct connected. Not really an issue except for the first time you do a full image backup of the computer, then it's worth running the cable to make this go faster (takes a long time to copy 100 Gig!!!)

Web Access is the coolest feature of all, I can upload or download files remotely with nothing but IE or Firefox. You can even setup an account that is Read Only so others can see your pictures but can't delete them by accident. I'm not a big network kind of person so it took me a while to figure out how to do this but it does work!

Good Product at a Great Price!
Easy set up and whisper-quiet operation

I researched NAS options and read countless reviews on various products for months before taking the plunge and buying this device. I was somewhat apprehensive about what might be involved with the technical setup. I am somewhat tech-savvy, but by no means an IT expert. I wanted a NAS that I could configure to support two computers via a Linksys router.

Due to limited desk space, I was forced to place this unit right beside me rather than across the room as I had hoped. I was pleasantly surprised to find out it is quiet, even when it is working. The unit is surprisingly small and compact and takes up little space. It looks huge in the photo, but it is smaller than a toaster - it looks/feels more like a hefty book.

The setup went easily enough, after an initial brief panic when I discovered all the .pdf documentation on my installation disk was in Japanese. After I calmed down, I just went to the Buffalo Web site and downloaded the .pdf in English. (This was probably just a fluke with my unit.)

The instructions for setting this up this NAS were clear, short and simple. So far I've had no problems or issues with the device.

Pros:
1. Small, unobtrusive profile
2. Runs quiet and cool
3. Easy instructions (at least when they are in the right language:)

Cons:
1. Expensive compared to a simple external hard drive; however, I think the storage benefits as far as networking two computers outweigh this con.
2. There's a big pitch about the "free" included Memeo backup software, but when I installed it, I discovered it's only a 30-day trial - so no real bonus there.

So far I think I made the right decision in this purchase, but another update may be warranted after I have used it for a few months or years.
All you need, probably

Buffalo Technology LS-W2.0TGL/R1 2TB LinkStation Pro Duo Shared Network Storage (Black)
I was looking for a RAID 1 (I do not trust the rest in this price range) and as large as possible. Ran into many in Amazon and this brand had better review than the others. This model showed up recently and the price (309$)was tempting, it only had four 5 Star review which makes it risky, but I received it yesterday and pretty happy with the result.

What I like about LinkStation:

Easy setup: You do not need to install the supplied software if you are geek enough to find the IP address in router menu. Web Interface is pretty easy with its help if you do not understand any parameter. I changed it from RAID 0 to RAID 1 in 2-3 minutes but the check disk after that took a long time (6-7 hours). It can easily be administered and the files system can be accessed from PC, Linux (I tested it with Ubantu 9.1, Open Suse 11, Yellow Dog 6 and all work fine) and MAC (I have not used it with MAC). It also has FTP that is more efficient protocol for bulk data transfer, with many different front end software in the market that makes it as easy as a file system.

Media Server: It has a DLNA (UPnP protocol) Media Server inside that makes it way more valuable. My TV (Sony XBR6) can only play photos on the Media Server, so I bought a SONY Play Station 3 (a Gaming Console + Blue Ray Player + Web Browser + UPnP media render) to play the media (Music, Photo and Video) stored in the LinkStation on my TV, and it works awesome. There are many cheaper solutions ( around 160$) if you just want the wireless access and play on TV. Also consider Sony XBR9 has a built-in Media Server client (Ethernet Only) in it. I am not sure it matches the speed of a PS3, because the XBR6 photo player is pretty slow. So the combination of PS3 and Linkstation works well, both wireless and wired.

Scalability: You can add as many LinkStation to your network and instead of RAID 1 have a scheduled backup between LinkStations weekly, considering the home media is not changing every day.

What I do not like about LinkStation:

Documents coming on CD are outdated.

You can not take a Disk out to test your RAID (call me paranoid)

P.S. Use of RAID 1 is expensive, especially in this price range, so do not expect it to be high speed in writing; However it looked to me faster than many USB external disks, but definitely slower that ATA second disk (7200 RPM) I have in my laptop. Also I was using Wireless G and not connected directly to my Gigabit router.
Great NAS Solution as File and Media Storage and Server

I also have the LinkStation Live model, which is a bit cheaper and as some flaws that I was not very happy about. The Pro Duo does not have the same flaws like its sister and also has a few additional features, such as the Media Server.

The Media Server feature was a positive surprise for me and something I am going to play around with more. The setup was easy, even within my not so simple network environment. Administration was simple and straight forward as well.

The device is much larger than the Live model with the same capacity, but that was expected, because the Pro Duo has TWO hard drives instead of just one (hence the name DUO). The reason for that is to provide real fail-over raid support or hard drive mirroring using two separate pieces of hardware for increased fail-over insurance. If your data are precious, then you will appreciate this feature.

I also own another NAS, called SimpleShare and must say that the Pro Duo is the clear winner of all three.
Fast and quiet

Reviewer: Alan R., Texas, USA
I replaced an old Snapserver with this guy. I changed the RAID settings to disk mirroring of 500GB -- the default was RAID0 giving 1TB of storage.

Pros:
* Quiet, very quiet.
* Fast. However, I'm not running videos or other really large files. Music, pictures, and office files mostly. I have not noticed any slowness compared to local drives. My network is 100Mbps; it should even be faster if running 1000.
* FTP server over the internet. I can easily drag files to a special folder I created, and send a link via email, and people can download from the linkstation.
* Administration is easy via the HTML interface. Security-wise, I can keep the kids and visitors out of financial folders, and grant read-only access to pictures.

Cons:
* CD software. I have no clue what purpose the CD software serves. I have uninstalled it after the initial configuration and renaming the hostname to something you can remember. I use my browser perform all config.
* Offline files and folders are not supported, as windows-based file systems are not supported.
* Administration via web browser runs a bit slow.

Amazon.com Product Description
The NETGEAR SC101 Storage Central offers:
  • An easy and inexpensive way to share hard drive space over a network.
  • Great expandability with room for two hard drives.
  • A 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port for fast data transfers.
  • Options for drive mirroring and spanning.
  • Included backup software.
The NETGEAR SC101 Storage Central is an expandable storage system that allows shared access by all computers on your network. With space for two IDE hard drives, you can set the device up to mirror each other so you have a backup of all your files in case either one fails.

There is room for two hard drives inside the SC101. View larger.
Excellent Value and Easy Setup
Unlike other network-attached storage (NAS) devices, the SC101 does not come with any drives but requires you to purchase your own. This allows for considerable cost savings. Opening up the SC101 only requires turning a latch that can be done with a quarter; no tools are needed. Attach the power connectors and IDE cables, set the jumpers, and slide the drive into place, and that's it.

After the hard drives are installed, plug the device in, attach it to the network, and install the included software. The software guides you through setup step by step. When everything is ready to go, it looks like a new hard drive has been installed on your PC and you use it just as you would any other hard drive. Backup software is included for users who don't already have their own preferred software. Please note that the SC101 is only compatible with Windows machines and won't work with Macs or Linux.

Outstanding Performance with Various Storage Options
The SC101 connects to your network via a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connection for fast data transfers. When you connect two drives to the device, you have the option of having them "mirrored" or "spanned." Mirrored storage lets you keep two copies of every file, one on each drive, so that everything is backed up in case of drive failure. When two drives are set to span, they appear as one volume so they are easy to work with and the device will automatically find your data across both drives.

The front panel has three LEDs to let you know the status of the power, hard disk and network at a glance. The NETGEAR SC101 Storage Central is backed by a 1-year warranty.

Product Description

With the HP Media Vault, you'll be able to quickly create a centralized storage and sharing solution for your home or small business that can handle your most important documents, photos, videos, and music--including the ability to integrate your home's iTunes digital audio libraries. The Linux-powered HP Media Vault MV2120 comes with an integrated 500 GB hard drive (7200 RPM) as well as one expansion bay, enabling you to effortlessly add another Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive with a terabyte (1 TB, or 1024 GB) of additional storage or for RAID 1 mirroring.

But the HP Media Vault isn't bound by the limitations of your wired or wireless network. With its powerful remote access features, you can create a URL that authorized users can access via a Web browser to download files. And with Photo Webshare, you can create your own online photo albums from images stored on the Media Vault.

Add another 1 TB of storage to the HP Media Vault thanks to one SATA expansion bay.

The Media Vault provides access to all your networked PCs as well as to remote users via the Internet.

Media Vault Design
The redesigned Media Vault now shares the same black chassis design and glowing blue hard drive indicators as its bigger HP MediaSmart Server sibling. Measuring 5.5 x 9.6 x 5.4 inches (WxDxH) and weighing 7.1 pounds, the MV2120 is smaller than its predecessor (the MV2000 series Media Vault), and it switches to a horizontal orientation for storing its hard drives.

Opening the front grille reveals a slide-out expansion bay on top, which can be fitted with an optional SATA hard drive. The front of the Media Vault also includes blue backlit icon indicators for power, network connectivity, and health of the integrated and optionally installed hard drives, as well as a USB 2.0 port. The back of the device includes an Ethernet jack (10/100/1000 Gigabit), an additional USB 2.0 port, and the power button. You can connect additional USB hard drives to the Media Vault for additional storage and backup options. Note, however, that printers won't work with the Media Vault as it does not include a print server. The MV2120 is powered by the Linux 2.6 kernel operating system and includes 128 MB of internal RAM memory.

A Central Hub for All Your Files
Great for the home, home office or small business that requires a central location for files that devices on the network can share, setting up and using your HP Media Vault is simple. A few quick steps get you up and running 24/7, and it's ready to work for you no matter how many desktop or notebook PCs are on your home network.

For music lovers, you can centralize your iTunes music library and playlists on the Media Vault for playback on any computer running iTunes on your network. And you can stream media files from the Media Vault to your networked TV and other digital devices for high-quality playback. You can access your media files from Windows-, Mac-, and Linux-based computers.

The HP Media Vault also enables direct remote access to your files when you're away from home, or to others connecting from far-flung locales. You can create an online connection to your Media Vault from any computer with access to the Internet. Use it to access your media files while on vacation, a multimedia presentation from a client site, or to share your media with others. You can also authorize visitors to access your Media Vault remotely so they can view the file folders you have designated for sharing. And you can grant permission for visitors to add their own files to designated folders on your Media Vault.

With HP Photo Webshare, it's easy to set up groups for sharing different photo albums. For instance, set up a photo Webshare so friends can view an album of your latest vacation; or allow family from near and far to add photos from your family reunion to create one blockbuster album.

Protect Your Data
The HP Media Vault keeps your digital life organized, accessible and most importantly, more protected. With its 500 GB installed capacity, it stores and protects important media and files on computers throughout your home or small office. And with customizable backup options your files can be automatically protected weekly, daily or continuously. In addition, for ultimate protection, attach a USB hard drive to your Media Vault and backup the most important Media Vault files to take to a separate, secure location.

The innovative new design lets you easily increase your storage as your needs evolve. Use the expansion bay on the HP Media Vault to add an extra hard drive for greater storage or the additional protection of a second mirrored copy of your data (RAID 1). For enhanced data security, use the expansion drive for creating a full backup copy of your most important files to store in a separate location.

The HP Media Vault Control Center provides easy management and configuration.
Easy Set-up and Management
The HP Media Vault Control Center software allows you to access shared folders, backup settings, and configuration tools. (The Control Center software requires Windows XP or Vista.) Shared Folders are the primary way of organizing files, music, photos, or videos and sharing them with other people. By default there are the five public preconfigured folders: Backup, Documents, Music, Photos, and Videos. These shared folders are accessible by anyone on the local network, and if password protected, can also be accessed remotely.

User accounts can be created on the HP Media Vault for enhanced security and to provide remote file access. Security is increased on shared folders by requiring passwords and setting read/write permissions for each user.

The HP Media Vault can also be utilized as an iTunes Music server, which will aggregate iTunes libraries from the systems on the local network and make one complete library with all music and playlists available to all iTunes clients. When enabled on a PC, the iTunes library on the PC is periodically polled to discover newly added music or videos. When new media is discovered, the files are copied to the iTunes library on the HP Media Vault where they are added to the aggregated iTunes library. (Note that only music files that are not DRM-protected can be streamed from the Media Vault.)

What's in the Box
HP Media Vault, power cable/AC adapter, Ethernet cable, software installation disc, printed setup poster

Product Description

The ReadyNAS NV+ by NETGEAR is a compact and attractive four-bay Network Attached Storage (NAS) device that can easily handle the storage needs of a home or small office. After putting the ReadyNAS NV+ to the test, we have concluded that it is an ideal storage solution for small offices or work groups with limited IT resources that require networked expandable RAID storage and advanced "server" features such as print and media servers, system monitoring with email alerts, and integrated backup management capabilities. (NOTE: This model does not include hard drive disks.)

What We Think

Overall Rating:

Pros: Compact design, easy-to-use, built-in RAID capability including X-RAID, provides media streaming for wide variety of devices, excellent online forums for add-ons and support

Cons: Insufficient user manuals, add-on software does not always have complete feature set

At a Glance

Capacity: No disks included
Dimensions: 7.9 x 5.2 x 8.7 inches (HxWxD)
Warranty: 5 years

The ReadyNAS NV+ houses four drive bays in one compact, attractive enclosure. View larger.
Out of Box Impressions and Design Features
Taking the ReadyNAS NV+ out of the box, we couldn't help but be surprised at how compact and solid feeling the device is. Imparting an air of quality workmanship and sturdy reliability, the NV+ measures a compact 7.9 x 5.2 x 8.7 inches (H x W x D) and is a hefty 10 pounds without the disks installed.

The styling is attractive, with a metallic "cheese-grater" look that is reminiscent of Apple's Mac Pros, a design that also allows for heat dissipation. A door panel opens for easy access to the four drive bays, each of which is on its own tray with an easy-to-load push-button mechanism, making disk installation a cinch.

Below the panel door is a backlit LCD display that shows status info such as the IP address and drive capacity. The power button sits on the upper left of the front face, next to four LEDs that give the status of each hard drive, a USB port, and a button labeled "Backup." The back of the NV+ sports a carrying handle, two USB ports, an Ethernet port, the system reset switch, power connector, cooling fan, and Kensington Lock security hole. Overall, the design is attractive, smartly laid out, and clearly labeled. Unlike many other NAS devices that you want to hide in a corner or in a closet, the ReadyNAS NV+ adds a handsome touch to the work area.

Initial Setup and Configuration
Our test unit had four pre-installed 750 GB hard drives for a total of three terabytes of disk space. The drives are hot-swappable, which means that they can be swapped out one-at-a-time without shutting down the NV+, and which also means that upgrading or replacing the drives--if necessary--will be easy.

Share your files, USB disk, and printer with all your computers and networked media player with the NV+.
The NV+ supports the industry standard RAID 0/1/5, as well as NETGEAR's own proprietary X-RAID, which supports single volume auto expansion with redundancy against a single drive failure. X-RAID makes the device future-proof, as you can simply swap out a smaller capacity installed drive for a larger one, and X-RAID will automatically copy over all the data.

The initial hardware set up was as simple as plugging the AC cord into the wall and connecting the Ethernet cord into the local network. Installing the included RAIDar software let us find the drive on our network, from which we were able to bring up the Web-based control panel. Set up required an easy jaunt through the Setup Wizard, and once completed, the drive appeared on each of the networked computers as expected.

The unit is pre-configured in X-RAID mode, which worked fine for us; we were literally up and running in minutes. The only snag was that the manual gave the wrong user/password to log into the machine, but a quick online search revealed the correct input information.

After we had the X-RAID running successfully, we reconfigured the drive to a RAID 5 configuration. Like X-RAID, RAID 5 reduces overall storage capacity by about 25% but offers redundant protection so everything continues to function even if one of the drives fails. The actual reconfiguration through the control panel took only a few minutes, though the entire process took over eight hours and necessitated deletion of all the existing data on the drives. (Don't worry! The ReadyNAS NV+ did all the work itself after we left the office for the day.)

The one complaint we had during the set-up procedures was with the documentation. In fact, the manual is the weak link of the package. The NV+ has a lot of functionality that is not very well explained or simply not mentioned. Fortunately, the ReadyNAS has its own NETGEAR-supported community Web site (www.readynas.com) with FAQs, forums, firmware updates, add-ons, and other goodies. We found the process of downloading firmware updates and add-ons quick and extremely easy.

NETGEAR's FrontView web-based control panel makes configuration and administration simple. View larger.
Web-based Control Panel
The Web-based control panel gives the administrator full control over the system. From it you can check the status of the machine, set the security settings, create user and group accounts, configure streaming services, update firmware, and much more. With processes that took more than a few minutes to complete, the ReadyNAS NV+ sent us email notifications at the completion of the tasks so we could continue with our other work in the meantime.

The control panel is clean and intuitive, eliminating the need for administrators to fiddle with a Unix command line to check status or change settings. Though some configuration and management issues can arise that better documentation could easily address, as long as the administrator is comfortable searching out information online when necessary, he or she should find managing the ReadyNAS NV+ relatively easy.

Our Performance Review
We ran the NV+ as our primary file server in our small workgroup -- consisting of both Macs running OS X and PCs running Windows XP -- without any problems or complaints of performance. We were able to access the server to work with, copy, and move files around seamlessly, with no hiccups to speak of. Our computers were all able to connect easily via CIMB and/or AFP protocols. Additionally, the ReadyNAS has support for the Network File System (NFS), but we did not test this as we do not run a Linux/Unix environment.

However, our one caveat is that we do not work heavily with media files such as large video files, so we cannot say for certain if the performance would be acceptable for use in, say, a high-performance video lab or similar setting.

Hard disks are installed on separate drive trays, making upgrades simple. View larger.
One important feature we needed was the ability to work remotely. To do so, we downloaded a WebDAV add-on from the ReadyNAS community Web site that allows for drag-and-drop file access to the ReadyNAS NV+ through an Internet connection via HTTPS. While we were easily able to connect to the ReadyNAS NV+ remotely, an apparent limitation or bug in the current firmware resulted in some problems with privileges. Specifically, when we revised or created files and folders remotely, they became "read-only" and required permissions to be manually changed through the control panel. A post on the ReadyNAS message board confirmed this behavior, which, while not a deal breaker, is certainly inconvenient.

Though the RAID configuration we chose has built-in redundant storage, we nonetheless decided to create nightly backups for even more peace of mind. We connected an external USB drive to the front USB port, and once the drive was recognized, it was a matter of seconds and a simple push of a button to schedule a daily backup of our main work folder.

Built-in FTP, iTunes, and Other Features
The NV+ features many add-ons and extras that we were able to easily install, either through the control panel or by downloading software updates and documentation from the ReadyNAS community Web site.

The ReadyNAS includes a built-in print server and an FTP server that were easy to set up. It also features a built-in Web server, which we successfully tested by creating simple Web pages. The built-in iTunes streaming server worked like a charm. After copying over MP3s into the designated folder, the songs automatically showed up in the iTunes folder of the networked computers.

The ReadyNAS NV+ also has built-in support for Squeezebox music players, UPnP AV devices, and streaming playback of videos, music, and photos from networked DVD and media players. Based on the ease of use with the iTunes server, we assume a similarly uncomplicated process. The ReadyNAS also has a built-in BitTorrent client, add-ons for a photo slideshow application, SSH access, and much more.

Included Back-Up Software
NETGEAR bundles a five-user license for EMC Retrospect Professional for Windows and a five-user license for EMC Retrospect Desktop for Macintosh. After installation on a desktop, we could easily automate and schedule backups of our desktops onto the NV+. EMC Retrospect is a pro-grade backup software offering powerful features superior to many bundled backup programs.

Conclusions
The ReadyNAS NV+ is a powerful, attractive, and flexible Network Attached Storage device that would work great in a home setting or even a small-to-medium office setting. It offers much of the functionality of a dedicated server, while requiring a small amount of space. Since set up is mostly plug-and-play, it does not require a dedicated IT personnel to manage, which is a huge bonus for home use or for a business on a budget.

As noted, the manual does not give all the answers. Fortunately, the strong online community and Web forums offer excellent support and services. And finally, the ReadyNAS NV+ is backed by an industry-leading 5-year warranty, so you can rest assured that you'll be protected should anything go wrong.
